There's a lot of work ahead

The weekend work – baking, gardening and making things. ALL FUN!

cleaning, moving … June 27, 2005

Filed under: Uncategorized — workahead @ 9:20 am

Life is pretty dull at the moment, all i seem to be doing is thinking about moving, cleaning, and making improvements to the house to encourage people to buy it!
My schools work is slowing down, two assemblies this week. Only a couple of weeks of youth group left, and then I’ll be totally moving focussed!
I’m really struggling for interesting things to blog at the moment!

decision made! June 20, 2005

We’re selling our house! Am glad we’ve got the decision out of the way, now we just have the stress of selling it and then moving!!!!! The plan is to eventually buy something, but we don’t have to worry about that now.

I’ve got a busy week, in schools every day apart from today. Then there’s making the house look nice so it will sell! I’m in charge of heavy duty cleaning, and hubby’s got lots of odd jobs to do!

spring harvest booking! June 16, 2005

Filed under: time off — workahead @ 9:15 am

Just wasted over an hour this morning trying to book a week at Spring Harvest next year. Did the same last year, and neither time have they had the accomodation I want!
This morning I got through just an hour after the booking lines had opened, but even still, the accomodation we want is no longer available. It is very difficult to go just as a couple, especially as a couple looking for cheap accomodation!
This year we went to FIEC instead, which wasn’t quite to our taste, but interesting all the same. I’m wondering what the other options are – Easter People and many more I’m sure. Perhaps we’ll find somewhere else to go, or perhaps we’ll just sit at home and sulk!

I do find these Christian conferences and retreats encouraging, inspiring and refereshing, but not all will suit everyone. Thinking about the next academic year, there’s the possibility of going to the youthwork conference in Eastbourne. Anyone going? Then I suppose I could look at booking something other than Spring Harvest, either for Easter or the summer. I’ve always fancied going to Greenbelt, but its not an option this year as we’ll be packing for the move.
Any recommendations anyone?

sell or rent June 13, 2005

Filed under: home — workahead @ 2:16 pm

This past week we’ve gone from selling to renting, and now I feel like selling again! We’ve had one estate agent and one letting agent carry out valuations so far. I’ve read far too much info on the subject, been advised by numerous people. Now the homework is nearly done and its time to make a decision. Unfortunately, as a sentimental girl I am finding this very hard as emotions do not help making good business decisions! This house was supposed to be my home for the next ten years! I had great plans for it! But God had other plans! Now I’m really excited about moving, but leaving this house will be hard, especially if we have to do more work on it to make it rentable!

Yancey’s top 4 June 6, 2005

I’ve been reading Philip Yancey’s ‘Church: Why Bother?’ over the past few days, which has been really encouraging. He lists the following as being important in the choice of church to attend.
1) Looking upward – focuses attention on God (through worship and teaching)
2) Looking around – a diverse community of many different people
3) Looking outward – reaching out into the local community
4) Looking inward – exuding grace, loving each other

As I’ve said this book is a real encouragement for those who are fed up with church. Its helped me to get my priorities straight, and I reckon I’ll be reading and re-reading this little book for years to come to keep my priorities straight when church all becomes about me instead of God and his community.

blogging June 4, 2005

Is it just me or does blogging have a theraputic quality? Being able to post my thoughts and feelings, and just sending them out feels good.
However, there’s always the chance that someone who you don’t want to, reads it!

something to smile about June 3, 2005

It’s friday afternoon, its chucking it down with rain, and I have to go to a funding meeting later which I don’t altogether agree with. (I feel the church is using the young people to get money for them, though the youth group is getting £1000 to spend themselves.)
But on the up side,
I’ve made a gorgeous tasting chocolate cake this morning, and I’m about to do a rhubarb crumble for tonight. The kitchen looks fab after its £100 makeover. The garden looks quite good too after an afternoons work. And my hiccups have gone!!!!

I truly am insane!

As I was painting the kitchen walls (house project no 2!) I began reflecting on further discussions about church that we had at house group last night. The question ‘What things should we look for in a church?’ entered my head. The more I talk to people, the more I discover that people find church difficult to be part of at different times, and yet they stay. Why stay in one church and not move to another? What is most important in a church?
And so I’ve very quickly created my top 5 priorities in a church. These are 5 things that are important to me. They may not be right, and I don’t know whether everyone should have the same top 5 or different. I’ve given this very little thought so far, but it would be interesting to know other people’s top 5’s!
1. Bible believing
2. Outreaching to the community in some way
3. People with enthusiasm for God and His work
4. A meeting which enables me to worship God
5. A meeting where I can learn more about God
