There's a lot of work ahead

The weekend work – baking, gardening and making things. ALL FUN!

Jesus Christ Superstar! March 29, 2005

Filed under: Uncategorized — workahead @ 1:52 pm

Hubby took me to see Jesus Christ Superstar at De Montfort Hall, Leicester as a suprise.
It isn’t the best musical I’ve ever seen, but we enjoyed it. The lighting and stage set really added to the show, and we thought it was very clever how the cross lifted out of the stage floor.

a bit sad today March 28, 2005

Today, I’ve turned down a job in Peterborough – and I’ve found it hard. The job was good, something I would like to do, but there were two issues.
Firstly, the church. Hubby and I would struggle being members of an anglo-catholic church.
Secondly, the project only had funding for a year, and no guarantees that funding would be found for more, though they hoped it would.
Perhaps I shouldn’t have applied at all. Though it was only through a visit to the church yesterday that helped us make up our minds.

This job hunting is hard, trying to find the right church with the right job. Today I feel disheartened, but tomorrow I will get on with writing more applications!

On the plus side, my husband has a suprise planned for me this evening, I just hope I’m in the mood to enjoy it!

Monkey bars! March 25, 2005

Filed under: time off — workahead @ 11:45 am

The suprise outing yesterday turned out to be Conkers – a outdoorsy kind of place, with assault course, lake, walks, train, and lots of educational stuff too! It was great! I always thought this place was for children, but the assault course is for teenagers and adults only!
I managed to swing from the monkey bars, clamber over walls, climb over the scramble net, and descend down the zip wire! Hubby and I ache this morning as a result of this assualt course, but it was great to become a child once again!
We unfortunately missed the last train ride of the day by a few minutes, so took a walk along the tree canopy walk – which comprised of a walkway amongst the treetops! Very short and not very exciting, apart from the little tree house, which was no more than a hut, but got us talking about tree houses for all of 30 seconds! Nothing was going to top the assault course, and anyway the place was about to close so we returned home glad of an afternoon of fresh air and fun!

looking forward … March 24, 2005

I’m really looking forward to a suprise outing this afternoon. Hubby finishes school at 2pm, and then we’re straight round to see some friends who have planned a suprise outing for us!!
It’s been a stressfull few days. Hubby and I have hardly seen each other, I haven’t been sleeping too well and on top of that we’re trying to make some important decisions!

I’m also looking forward to the Easter hols. Our plan is to see the parents for a couple of days, have them drive us to the airport (we’re not silly!), fly to Guernsey, explore Guernsey, perform the gospel show in Guernsey, fly back from Guernsey, have parents pick us up from airport, travel to Wales, listen to lots of Christian speakers at the FIEC conference, perform a few magic tricks, go home, but then travel around the country again for another two magic shows! It does sound like a magic tour- and in fact hubby is calling it his European tour! I however am hoping for some relaxation!

Update! March 22, 2005

Filed under: Uncategorized — workahead @ 2:26 pm

Because of the interview yesterday, I’ve been busy trying to do all the washing and cleaning and youth stuff and, and, and, and!!!!!!!!

The interview went well yesterday, very well actually, and I’m now having to do a lot of thinking.

We’ve had to cancel our youth weekend away through to lack of take up. We’ve got a few ideas of what to do with the 6 who were interested; a sleepover, at our church or another one nearby.

Hubby is performing at Westminster Chapel tonight, not quite sure how we’re going to get him there with disruptions on the trainline due to an accident at Market Harborough this morning.

Last night was Leicester Magic Circle’s close up competition. He didn’t win, but he did do a very good job producing fish from all sorts of places!!!!

Life is good! Now I had better go and see to another load of washing!

‘my end of contract report’ March 18, 2005

Filed under: self — workahead @ 3:38 pm

That’s the title of a five minute presentation I have to do for a job interview next week. It’s been buzzing round my head for the past few days, and I even had an attempt at writing it yesterday – but I wasn’t too impressed with what I produced!

The first question I have to answer is whether I report on my last paid post, or whether I talk about the voluntary work I’ve been doing. I’m inclined to go for the former.
My next problem is trying to condense two years work into five minutes! Thinking that out loud this afternoon (while supervising children do a fun run at the local primary school!) has made me decide that attempting to cover all the achievements would be far too difficult.

My current thought is to take highlights from the two years and present them in a creative way. In other words, using quotes, photos and anything else I can get my hands on, give the interview panel a flavour for the work that went on.

What do you reckon? How would you present an end of contract report in five minutes?

spring is here! March 17, 2005

Spring seems to have arrived. Its getting warmer and the sun is shining. Its rather windy outside, but I’m going to have to go out for a walk!

Thank God for his wonderful creation!

Easter Lessons March 16, 2005

Filed under: youthwork — workahead @ 11:49 am

I’ve taught two y7 Easter lessons this morning. They both went well.
I really struggled in planning the lesson, as there were so many things I could have said about the Easter story.
I ended up telling a short, concise version, focussing on the cross. I used objects from the story to bring it to life. I then let them investigate the story of the ressurection with a resource I created of facts and interviews of people involved. Some concluded that Jesus really did rise from the dead, others thought someone had stolen the body.
I had some really good questions too, and even had a conversation afterwards with one pupil who enquired about whether Christians should go to church. It turned out that his mate did, so I suggested he go with him one week to see what its like. (he considered himself to be a christian).

All in all, a good morning!

working to live March 16, 2005

Filed under: Uncategorized — workahead @ 11:33 am

Hubby and I went to a care for the family event called working to live last night. It was really good and gave us a lot to think about. The focus of the evening was about enjoying your work, having a passion for your work rather than work being a prison.
I didn’t hear anything I hadn’t heard before, but it gave me lots of useful questions to think about , some which are really useful for thinking about a job you are looking for!
Here are some of the questions, perhaps they’ll make you think too!

Why am I doing what I’m doing?
What are my priorities in life? What is most important to me? Do you live to these priorities?
Are you well motivated?
Does what we do define who we are?
What am I driven by? Is this good and healthy?
Does the place I work encourage and build my passion?
How close to the abilities and gifts I have is my job?
Am I doing what I do best most of every day?
If your work could be anything you want, what would it be?
How do you spend time on yourself to restore yourself? Do you do it?

I wish I could sum up the whole evening (2.5 hours!) in a sentence, but I can’t. But if you don’t think you’ve got that life/work balance right, or you don’t love your job, then this seminar is for you!

baking frenzy! March 14, 2005

Filed under: food — workahead @ 4:34 pm

I spent more time in the kitchen yesterday than I did at church!
I was on a mission to use up some porridge oats and museli.
My first batch were traditional oatcakes, and in hubby’s words ‘they tasted like dust!’
Half went on the lawn for the birds, and the rest went in the bin.
I then decided on a well tried recipe of raisin and oat cookies – all of these but one were eaten by the church group in the evening!
Flapjacks are always a good way to use up porridge oats, so I made a rather large batch (which are ready downstairs to be eaten!
Then came my experiment – museli flapjacks. The church group ate them all! I didn’t even get to taste one! But I still have a bit of museli left over, so I’ll be making another batch soon!

After all my baking, I then made the tomato sauce needed for our french bread pizzas for the church group. We had a good night last night. We ate lots of the french bread pizza, and my cakes!!!!!
